Clean Drinking Water Project

Eleven per cent of the global population—783 million people—remains without access to a source of clean drinking water and, at the current pace of world attention to this problem, 605 million people will still lack coverage in 2015. More than 3.4 million people die each year from water-borne diseases. Nearly all deaths (99 percent) occur in the developing world and southeast Asia is one of the largely affected regions, where same polluted water ponds are shared by humans, livestock, and animals. As per World Bank Report Pakistan is now among the 17 countries that are currently facing water shortage. In Pakistan overall 44 per cent of the population lacks access to safe drinking water, while in rural areas 90 per cent of the population lacks such access. It is estimated that about 200,000 children in Pakistan die every year of diarrheal diseases alone, according to a report of Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR). It is appropriate to mention here that the major source of drinking water in Pakistan is groundwater. With 90 per cent population in rural area lacking safe drinking water, RRAI recognized this problem and started a project to install hand water pumps in the remote villages of Pakistan.

RRAI has different types of Clean Drinking Water Projects that it runs in partnership with Pravalli Welfare Trust of Pakistan.

  1. Small Hand Water Pumps ($250),
  2. Large Community Hand Water Pumps($600),
  3. Small Solar Powered Water Pump($750) with storage tanks.
  4. Electric Pumps($700) with storage tanks.
  5. Solar Pumps for Existing Deep Wells($1800) with storage tanks.
  6. Agriculture Pumps($2000) with storage tanks in Thar Desert area of Sindh..
  7. Natural Spring Water Schemes: (???) In hilly areas like Abbottabad and Azad Kashmir, RRAI provides means to bring water from distant springs to villages by gravity and provide water storage tanks in the village.

The program is divided into PHASES

Phase I of this project was started in January 2013 with a goal of 100 water pumps in six months. RRAI was able to raise enough money through donations to almost meet the set goal by installing ninety-one (91) water pumps in various district of Punjab including Bahawalnagar, Faisalabad, Jhung and Lahore at an average cost of $150 per pump.

Phase II of this project was started in July 2013 again with a goal of installing 100 water pumps by the end of year 2013. This time with the help of generous donors we were able to exceed the goal and completed installation of 109 water pumps. During Phase II we installed pumps in different districts of Punjab and Sindh. Due to higher cost of installation in Sindh the average cost per pump was $175.

Phase III of this project was started in January 2014. In Phase III, our goal was to install 100 water pumps by the end of 2014 year, while expanding the project into other provinces of Pakistan besides Punjab and Sindh and also introducing motorized pumps with water storage facilities for larger rural communities where needed. We have achieved this goal and completed the installment of 100 water pumps and one motorized pump with a storage tank that serves a village near Abbottabad in Pakistan. This was made possible by teamwork of willing volunteers in Pakistan and willingness by both local Pakistani and international donors to sponsor more water pumps.

Phase IV started in January 2015 has been completed by meeting the target of installing 100 more hand water pumps in remote villages of Punjab and Sindh states of Pakistan.

Phase V Started in August 2015 and has been completed by meeting the target of installing 100 more hand water pumps in remote villages of Punjab and Sindh states of Pakistan.

Phase VI Completed by meeting the target of installing 100 more Clean drinking water schemes in remote villages of Punjab and Sindh states of Pakistan.

Phase VII Completed by meeting the target of installing 100 more Clean drinking water schemes in remote villages of Punjab and Sindh states of Pakistan.

Phase VIII Completed by meeting the target of installing 100 more Clean drinking water schemes in remote villages of Punjab and Sindh states of Pakistan.

Phase IV  Completed by meeting the target of installing 100 more Clean drinking water schemes in remote villages of Punjab and Sindh states of Pakistan

Phase X  Completed by meeting the target of installing 100 more Clean drinking water schemes in remote villages of Punjab, and Sindh states of Pakistan

Phase XI  (Ongoing) For Phase 11 we have again set a goal of installing 100 more hand water pumps by the end of 2020 in the remote villages of Punjab, Baluchistan and Sindh states of Pakistan and are looking forward to receiving generous donation from our contributors to accomplish this goal.

RRAI offers the donors an option of getting their or their loved ones name posted on the pump for Sadqa Jariyah (ongoing charity). In order to achieve PHASE IV goal, the RRAI is appealing individuals interested in earning Sadqa Jariyah to become a part of this project.
