The people of Kashmir have once again been devastated, this time by the Nature. As per the conservative estimates, out of 2.5 million people in the Kashmir valley about 1.5 million were adversely affected by the floods of September 2014. At the peak of the disaster the capital city of Srinagar was submerged under 14-25 feet of flood water. The breached levies resulted in a tsunami like effect with large areas of Srinagar hit by 10-15 feet waves that washed away houses, people, and animal stock. The tragedy is of unimaginable proportions. The actual magnitude of the total destruction, the number of dead and the people who are missing may not be known for some time. The rehabilitation of half a million people who have practically lost everything and have become internally displaced persons (IDPs) is a huge challenge. The valley needs to be cleaned up and disinfected. Most of the houses have to be re-built or reinforced. IDPs will need to be immediately provided with warm clothing, food supplies and other items of routine use as the winter is approaching. RRAI has started a nationwide effort to raise donation for their relief and rehabilitation of IDPs
